The lead pipe, in trenchless technology, is the first in a series of pipe lengths which are combined as the jacking shield creates the pathway through the soil. The dimensions of the lead pipe set the parameters for the jacking shield configuration. Lead pipes are used in pipe jacking operations when tunneling through the earth to lay underground piping or culverts.
The lead pipe is the length of pipe on which a jacking shield is mounted during a horizontal directional drilling operation. The shield is placed over the end of the lead pipe to protect workers during the excavation process. The lead pipe is specifically manufactured with a flat end instead of a spigot and it does not have joint gaskets. Lead pipes can also be used when the excavation work is completed by hand rather than by a machine.
