Building stormwater refers to the portion of stormwater collected from a building’s roof and any surrounding paved areas within the building property line. This stormwater typically originates from precipitations events such as rain and snow/ice melt and is directed, via drainage piping, to a stormwater sewer.
Building stormwater is also known as runoff.
In buildings, the practice of intercepting stormwater runoff from roofs and paved areas is essential to ensure that the water is safely directed to the municipal stormwater sewer system, therefore preventing ponding and flooding of the site.
For large developments, building stormwater capture involves collecting the water and releasing it at a controlled rate such that excessive flow rates do not enter and overload the stormwater sewer system. This is typically achieved by using detention ponds, which collect the stormwater and release it at a predetermined slower rate.
