Wireline, in the context of trenchless technology, is a guidance system for guiding a drill head during the process of underground horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The position and altitude of the drill head is transmitted to the monitoring system housed within the drill operator with the help of a wire attached to the drill pipe. The use of wireline is very important in trenchless technology owing to the vast array of underground pipe networks that convey electric cables, telephone cables, water, sewage, etc. all across the country.

In trenchless boring, it is not possible to see obstacles that may be encountered during the course of drilling. For this purpose, different technologies have been developed to enable drilling without damaging other installations. One such technology is the wireline. The wireline reads the azimuth and inclination with the help of a magnetic guidance system. The data is transmitted through the wire line installed in the drill head. The drill operator does the required calculations with the help of transmitted data to ensure that the required parameters are met. The wireline provides 2% accuracy in depths over 32 yards (30 meters) when combined with the TruTracker system.
