A grinder pump is a wastewater conveyance device. Wastewater and water from water-using household appliances flows through the home’s pipes into the grinder pump’s holding tank. Once the wastewater inside the tank reaches a specific level, the pump will turn on, grind the waste into a fine slurry, and pump it to the central sewer system. A grinder pump will discharge a finely ground slurry into a small diameter pressure pipe. In a low-pressure sewer system (LPSS), all the piping downstream of the grinder pump will normally be under low pressure, 60psi or less. Trenchless technology is used to install or repair grinder pumps.

A grinder pump is a part of the sewer system in most homes and it prevents clogging or blockage in municipal sewer lines. Grinder pumps are installed at a depth under the property below the frost line to prevent freezing in cold weather. These pumps are used where high pressure pumping is required, such as pumping into a pressurized municipal sewer main, over distances of more than 1,000 feet, across lifts of more than 30 feet, and where gravity cannot act to discharge the sewer, such as in hilly regions, at a high ground water table, on flat land, in an extremely cold environment, and at stream crossings. Grinder pumps consist of a pump, a tank, and a level sensor. The inlet pipe is connected to the sewer pipes from the home and the outlet pipe is connected to the municipal sewer main.
