What Does Gauging Station Mean?

A Gauging station is a facility used by hydrologists in order to take measurements of data regarding terrestial bodies of water. A gauging station is used to monitor streams, lakes, rivers, canals or reservoirs. Gauging stations collect a variety of data including water height, chemistry, velocity and temperature. Some gauging stations may be automated, sending the data they collect to a central data logging facility.

There are a variety of types of gauging stations. Staff gauges provide water height information that needs to be read manually. Gauge houses are permanent structures which usually house a variety of gauging equipment and have the capability to send data via satellite to a data logging facility. Vertical pipe gages allow the flow of water into the pipe to measure water height. Vertical pipe gages may also be fitted with memory capabilities as a way to upload data to a computer through a physical link.
