The cutting head of the auger boring machine is attached to the auger string and helps progress the machine forward during the boring operation. There are two types of auger boring systems namely track and cradle type.
The string of the auger is formed when one or more augers are attached one behind the other as the bore progresses. The leading auger is attached to the cutting head and the torque is applied by the machine to the auger which in turn rotates the cutting head. Hydraulic jacks at the rear of the machine advance the casing forward. As the first casing is installed and the auger is inside, another set of auger and casing is attached to the previous auger and casing and the process is repeated till the entire casing length is installed. The augers inside the casing form the auger string which help propel the cutting head forward to finish the installation.
