Sediment

What Does Sediment Mean?

Sediment is material that is deposited in underground pipes by the flow of water and other liquids. These deposits can clog or deteriorate pipes over time, and they may create significant problems for sanitary sewers.

Trenchless rehabilitation includes processes to deal with sediments that have accumulated within pipes.

1989年纸等研究,“下水道的沉积物” by R.W. Crabtree provide analysis of the nature and types of sediments that affect wastewater treatment systems. The problem may be multiplied in the case of combined sewers, where sewage and storm water runoff freely mix. Sediments may include sand, silt, gravel and clay, as well as rust or chemical pollutants.

To remove sediments from affected pipes, trenchless rehabilitation experts may use a variety of methods. Flushing a pipe with water under pressure is one way. Other methods include rodding, winching, jetting or manual removal. Devices with specialized nozzles, suction or cutting heads may also be used to disrupt and remove sedimentation.
