A directional Plan View, in the context of Horizontal Directional Drilling(HDD), is defined as a plan of the proposed project site projected on paper with Cartesian coordinates showing the bore path in East, West, North and South directions. This plan view helps give a complete picture of the directional path that the drilling project is supposed to undertake.
Like any construction project, trenchless construction also uses a directional plan view as a guide when directional drilling, boring and microtunneling. Underground construction projects often face obstacles in the drilling path. Using survey tools, such as directional survey stations, it is possible to obtain a map-like view of the underground utilities that lie in the path of the proposed bore hole. In fact, it is more essential in trenchless technology than ever before because of the extensive network of service connections like sewer lines, water lines, gas pipelines and cables that run below the surface of the ground. A plan view helps determine the right path for a bore hole for the laying of pipeline without the risk of disturbing existing lines, thus minimizing accidental cross bores and bursts.
