When planning a trenchless construction activity, certain parameters are defined and specified. One of these parameters is the measured depth of the hole. Once the drill is completed, the actual measured depth is determined and the excess measured depth is reported as the difference between the design depth and the actual depth of the finished hole.
Designing and planning a trenchless construction activity is a detailed engineering process whereby geological conditions are assessed, proposed routes are analysed, drilling depths are determined and the ideal drilling rig to suite the application is selected. As the actual conditions in the ground vary from the design conditions, and depending on the accuracy of the steering mechanisms of the rig, there is always some variance in the installation compared to the design. Excess measured depth is a reported parameter so that contractors and engineers can evaluate the difference between design and actual performance and make any corrections necessary, while also gaining lessons for future projects.
